Message from the President

Sustainable growth far into the future

In recent years, the world has seen a rising tide of uncertainty as a multitude of environmental and societal issues continue to worsen. In Japan, major changes are already underway, with the rapidly decreasing birthrate and aging population fueling an alarming population decline. Geopolitical risks are also having major global impacts, such as the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In these difficult circumstances, our chief responsibility as a corporate citizen is to help the world achieve sustainability. Since our founding, we have developed our business around soy, rapeseed, palm, and other plant resources, and have relied on the Natural Power of Plants to create value. For the Group to achieve long-term sustainable growth, we must work to build a future where plants can grow and people can live healthy lives. Accordingly, we are aware that changes in the climate and global environment and the use of raw materials without considering sustainability could threaten the very existence of our business.

Our vision for 2030

The key to achieving sustainable growth for the Group is to align our actions in pursuit of sustainability with our goals, and to incorporate them into our management and economic activities rather than conducting them separately. In fiscal 2021, we launched The Nisshin OilliO Group Vision 2030 (Vision 2030), a long-term vision that positions creating shared value (CSV) to address a variety of issues as the driver of growth. The vision defines the kind of corporate group we aim to be—one that harnesses the Natural Power of Plants and ever-advancing expertise in oils and fats to serve as a platform for creating new functions of food, providing different types of value, and delivering them to everyone in the form of energy for living.

To make Vision 2030 a reality, we identified six priorities (materiality)—good health for all, quality of life, global environment, contribution to the food value chain, supply chain connected by trust, and human resource management—and set goals (CSV goals) for each.

Specific efforts to achieve our goals

We are engaging in specific efforts to achieve goals related to our priorities. For example, to achieve good health for all, we use the Group’s knowledge of lipid nutrition to guide development of products that help resolve several health issues. We also convey health information on lipids in the form of stories to make it more straightforward for consumers.

For the global environment, we will make up-front investments to achieve our targets for reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions. We will expand our network of support to achieve our goals for Scope 3 emissions throughout the supply chain and solidify relationships that allow us to collaborate while delving deeper into our business. To resolve the problems of plastic, we will design products that reduce environmental impact—for example, incorporating recycled PET and biomass polyethylene—and work with local governments and relevant organizations and companies to establish a system for recycling the plastic containers used for edible oil. To achieve a supply chain connected by trust, we are committed to ensuring traceability in our palm oil supply chain and constantly updating our system to ensure that it remains trustworthy as part of our commitment to NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation).

Focus not only on what we can do, but also challenges beyond our current reach

As the above efforts demonstrate, we understand that we cannot achieve sustainability by continuing on with business as usual. We must look beyond our present abilities to see what must be accomplished to create a sustainable future, and will continue to take on important challenges in cooperation with our stakeholders in Japan and overseas.

We look forward to your continued support and guidance.
